Mousse and Curl Type

If you want the product to be successful, then you should choose it based on the thickness of your hair. Your curl type also plays a role in the decision-making process.

  • Type 2 – Your hair is wavy.
  • Type 3 – Your hair is curly.
  • Type 4 – Your hair is kinky.

While this is a general overview of the different hair types, you still need to narrow down the options a bit further.

Each one has different levels of curliness, including “a,” “b,” and “c.”

If you have Type 3 curls or thin hair, mousse is probably the best option for you since it will offer you flexible hold and won’t weigh down the strands.

If you have Type 4 kinky curls or thick hair, then gel is probably the best choice for a stronger hold.

Mousse is ideal for anyone who wants a flexible hold or wants to add volume.

What Is the Best Mousse for Curly Hair?

Technically, any mousse will work; it just depends on how you apply it and what kind of hold you need.

We encourage you to choose a mousse based on the quality of the product and consider the results that it claims to provide.

Göt2b’s mousse, for example, is infused with collagen and will help add volume.

TIGI’s Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier, will provide you with a medium level of hold and help define your curls or waves.

Application is also important when it comes to using mousse. For best results, you should apply it to your hair section by section and comb it in with your fingers. Fine combs will only separate the strands, which is something you want to avoid when defining curls, so use your fingers only.

Scrunch your waves or curls after applying the mousse and then follow with a defuser.

Avoid using an excessive amount of product, especially if you have fine hair; it will weigh them down and cause you to have less defined curls.

Top Mousse for Curly Hair Reviews

1. TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier

All mousse will add some degree of volume, but if you already have a lot of hair, one that offers hold and helps you define your curls is ideal.

This product is very light once applied to your hair and will help you fight the frizz. TIGI infused some jojoba seed oil and sunflower seed oil into the formula to help smooth and nourish the strands, which not something you usually find in mousse. We were pleasantly surprised!

Whether you have wavy hair or kinky curls, this will provide you with a flexible hold without the crunch. It is especially useful in humid weather!

2. Joico Whipped Foam – Power Whip

Unlike airy, stiff mousse, this one has a slightly creamy texture.

They added some plum kernel oil into the formula that will help moisturize your hair without weighing it down or leave it feeling greasy. The hold is firm yet flexible, and it will help you create a more voluminous look if you have thin hair.

It’s not quite as popular as TIGI’s Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier, but if you are looking for an alternative and you have Type 3 or Type 4 curls, try this product!

We realize it is a bit more expensive, but if you have the budget for it or if you only use mousse occasionally, it is a great investment.

3. Bumble and Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse

Having tried quite a few brands of mousse, we felt that Bumble and Bumble offered the best mousse for wavy hair on the list.

Thankfully, it does not contain any sulfates, parabens or phthalates and the shaping polymers they used will provide you with a firm hold even as you style.

In the volume department, it seems to work well on those with thin hair but be careful not to apply too much. If you do, it will weigh down the strands and cause you to lose some of the lift and curl. Less is more, and that is definitely true of this product!

Some of the ingredients seem to dry out the hair and scalp of some users, and if you use too much, it will also leave your hair crunchy.

For the price tag, we would have liked it to work well for a wider range of users, but if you have thin hair and only use mousse occasionally, the results are worth the money!
